In a recent post, Jeremy Zawodny talks about a blind test of different search engines. He suggests that a blind comparison of the search engine's results would be surprising... make the test with the following engines :

This is not "blind" but, try to only look at the relevance of the results, not the engine (or close your eyes :) :

And if you feel often disappointed with Google results try using these others search engines for a few days :

Hakia (semantic search)

Cuil

Ask

MSN Live Search

Yahoo!

and keep in mind that only the first results are clicked by Google's users but nobody uses the "I'm feeling lucky" button ! So, from an end user point of view, you should only compare the first 4 results and the last at the bottom of the page...
